Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3

Riders searching for the ultimate side-by-side often compare Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3 to decide which machine fits their riding style and the features they desire. Both UTVs dominate off-road conversations because they combine advanced engineering with trail-proven performance. Whether exploring wooded routes, rocky terrain, or open backcountry, understanding how each machine performs helps riders choose wisely. The Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3 debate usually comes down to handling, power, features, and comfort across varied landscapes.

Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3: Handling and Power Differences

Backbone Adventures offers the Polaris RZR 1000 XP Ultimate (114hp) while our sister company Estes Park ATV Rentals offers the Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo (135hp). So, our staff gets the opportunity to experience both on a regular basis. To be honest, the favorite is split down the middle 50/50 when it comes to power and handling. Some love the off the line power or initial punch of the 900 turbo Can-Am. I like it to. It really gets your blood pumping. It is a thrill. However, most would agree the handling isn’t quite as good. I’ll put it to you like this: Most feel they’re riding the RZR, but when in the X3, it’s riding them. It just doesn’t track as well and feels loose.

Comfort, Design, and Riding Style

Comfort plays a major role during longer rides. The Polaris RZR offers a refined cockpit layout with intuitive controls and smoother steering feedback. This makes it appealing to riders who want comfort without sacrificing performance. Searches like Polaris RZR ride comfort and easy-to-drive sport UTV reflect this appeal.

The Maverick X3 delivers a race-inspired driving experience. Its seating position, suspension, and power delivery cater to experienced riders seeking adrenaline. Phrases such as Can-Am Maverick X3 aggressive ride and high-horsepower side-by-side frequently appear in rider comparisons.

Choosing Between Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3

Choosing Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3 depends on how and where you ride. Plain and simple, in our opinion, the X3 is great for dunes and flat fast trails. The RZR is MUCH better for trail riding due to its trail focused clutch and gearing, plus it’s superior comfort and view from the cockpit. Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3 comparison shows that both machines deliver elite off-road performance for riders who demand capability, durability, and excitement.

Mechanic Notes

If you work on your own machines, you’ll want to pay attention. Our Polaris and Can-Am machines see 4500 miles a year and get put through the ringer on a daily basis. If there is a weekness (and there are in both), we’ll find it. It’s important to note that my comparison is based on bone stock machines being driven by inexperienced riders. Read on and I’ll explain the pros and cons of the Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3.

Polaris RZR 1000 XP Ultimate Mechanic Notes

Pros vs Can-Am

  • Strong and reliable frame
  • Mechanical parts are MUCH easier to work on than the Can-Am. My mechanics hate to see a Can-Am on the repair list for the day.
  • The clutches are way easier to rebuild than Can-Am. Belts do last longer in the Polaris.

Cons

  • Upon tip over, if you don’t let the oil settle back into the crankcase, you will blow the motor when you start and run it.
  • Minor electrical sensor issues rear their ugly head from time to time, especially if you powerwash deeply and religiously.
  • The front shocks feel great until they blow out and that will happen with aggressive riding.
  • Stick with 2024 a newer. 2023 and older have clutch and transmission issues.
  • The 2024 a newer 1000 XP does burn a little oil. So, check it and top it off regularly.

Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo Mechanic Notes

Pros vs Polaris

  • Shocks are superior in reliability to the 1000 XP.
  • Replacing plastic is MUCH cheaper and way easier than Polaris.

Cons

  • Upon tip over, if it’s on it’s side or top for a while, oil will get into the turbo and upon running it, the turbo will shank. You’ll know this when it starts puking smoke and loses power.
  • The frame is crap out of the box. You WILL need a front frame brace and weld in braces for the trailing arms. This is no joke.
  • Ground clearance is not as high as Polaris unless you do the Fox tune (highly suggested). The OEM skid plate isn’t as good either.
  • The front control arm bushings don’t last as long as Polaris.
  • After 2000 miles, this thing sounds like a pop can full of rocks. There are more rattles than you can shake a stick at.

Let’s Talk Control Arms

Please excuse me for having a serious issue with heavy duty control arms. Here’s why I do: Let’s take the Can-Am Maverick X3 RR turbo. This elevated machine boasts heavy duty control arms. It’s one of the many upgrades. I don’t consider it an upgrade though. I consider it a serious problem if you hit a stump, tree, or rock. The problem is, these control arms are stronger than the frame. Polaris has their heavy duty arms on some elevated machines as well. If you smash into something, the frame will bend instead of the control arm snapping away as I believe it should. I’d rather replace a $150 control arm than deal with a totaled machine because the frame is bent. This is one of the things I look at when comparing higher end models for the Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3.

Polaris Ride Command

For the life of me, I can’t understand why Can-Am hasn’t stepped up with their own navigation system to compete with Polaris. The Ride Command unit in the Ultimate Polaris machines is something I can’t do without. Yes, I love the accurate trail navigation and group ride feature, but there is so much more. It has a built in help alert feature to alert other riders in your group or emergency services. It has on baord vehicle diagnostics (invaluable). You can even set the speed limit and lock out your machine to protect it. No more theft issues. If it gets stolen, not only is it locked out, the Ride Command + unit can tell the police exactly where it is. Plus, it comes with the Bluetooth Rockford Fosgate system.

Bottom Line

When comparing the Polaris RZR vs Can-Am Maverick X3, I’m going X3 for speed and power and Polaris for literally everything else. Although I love and hate both for different reasons, I’d go Polaris if I was spending my hard earned money. The only other brand I would consider is the Kawasaki KRX. It’s a great machine and I love the fact that is designed and manufactured right here in the U.S.A
